Man of the Day 7/13: Tuukka Rask

Tuukka Mikael Rask

Born March 10, 1987 (age 24) in Savonlinna, Finland

Goaltender for the Boston Bruins

Rask began his career in the Finnish leagues, a start that included racking up such a good show in a short tenure with the Ilves Jr. team (1.86 GAA, .935%) that he was ranked as the number one European goalie in the 2005 NHL draft. That is also the year he was drafted–by Toronto. Before he ever played for Toronto, he was shipped up to Boston in exchange for Andrew Raycroft after Rask didn’t meet their goaltending vision for the future. Oh well. Not long thereafter, he recorded his first win as a Bruin against Toronto. He was sent back to Providence for a while because the team went with a Tim Thomas-Manny Fernandez duo for 2008-09. But when Fernandez had some back pain, Rask was called up for his only game in 08-09: a 1-0 home shutout against the Rangers!

Also, he looks pretty good all dressed up for the 2010 Winter Classic.

In 2009-10, although he turned in a great performance (only goalie with a GAA of less than 2.00 and a save percentage more than .930) and was the Bruins’ starter, he was not nominated for the Calder although he could have been. Oh well. This year, with Tim Thomas back in form, Rask returned to backup duties. He played 29 games, 11-14 and two overtime losses, netting two shutouts, a GAA of 2.67 and a .918%. The fact that he never went between the pipes during this year’s playoff run has already been covered here before. Rask is only the second Finnish goalie to hoist the Stanley Cup; Antti Niemi last year was the first. Now in the offseason I presume he will take Stanley with him over to Finland. It will be fun to see his day with the cup.

Get ya some!
