Man of the Day 7/15: Zach Bogosian

Zach Bogosian

Born July 15, 1990 (age 21) in Massena, New York, USA

Defenseman and free agent

This is a double first for Man of the Day – not only is he our first birthday boy, but he’s also our first unsigned free agent. Where he’ll play is anyone’s guess at the moment, but for now, let’s talk about this lovely guy.

Zach is the first player of Armenian descent in the NHL (he has a tattoo of an Armenian cross on his back, one of five tats that we’d love to see).  He started skating at 2 1/2 and was in a hockey league at 3 – he was practically a baby!  He stayed in the minors there till he went off to Massachusetts and Cushing Academy, where he played for two years.

(By the way, Zach’s hometown is so close to the Canadian border, you could practically spit across the river and hit Quebec.)

The OHL Draft led him to the Peterborough Petes (wait, that’s their name? Okay then), where he really racked up points and accolades: Second All-Rookie Team, First All-Star Team, the only defenseman to have 61 points (11 goals, 50 assists) in the 2007-08 season, and he played in the All-Star Classic as well as the CHL Top Prospects Game.

Watermark aside, look at him. Is he not a heavenly creature?

When the 2008 Entry Draft rolled around, he was chosen third overall by the Atlanta Thrashers, and there he stayed, although his first two seasons were punctuated with injuries – a broken leg the first season and a broken left thumb in the second. And in his third year with the Thrashers, he made a sweet goal followed by an unintended roll, which the announcers called “the tumbleina at center ice.” Whatever, it was awesome.

Here’s an interesting tidbit: Zach had two years of high school left when he went off to the OHL. He didn’t want to miss out on graduating, so he took his classes online.

And here’s the best part about Zach: he has a tricked-out Escalade with a sweet sound system. Oh yeah, he’s been interviewed about it. And what ‘s his favorite song? This one (NSFW, fair warning).

There are quite a few pictures of him making funny faces like this.
