Man of the Day 7/21: Devan Dubnyk

Devan Dubnyk

Born May 4, 1986 (age 25) in Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada

Goaltender for the Edmonton Oilers

I [Emma] have some good Oilers fan friends and when they heard I wanted to spotlight some of their guys here, they were overjoyed to offer up suggestions. Goalies are always appreciated and my friends do like Dubnyk, so he’s a good fit. Dubnyk started out with the WHL’s Kamloops Blazers, playing in almost 200 games over five years for them while also staying in school (hooray education), as noted by his winning CHL Scholastic Player of the Year in 2004. 2004 is also when he was selected 14th overall in the draft by the Oilers–homegrown talent!

In 2006 he went pro, going to the ECHL’s Stockton Thunder, setting club records there and being named an ECHL All-Star for 2006-07. Then it was up another level–Dubnyk certainly has worked all the rungs of the ladder–to the AHL’s Springfield Falcons, racking up good stats and setting more records! His first season of Oilers action came because Nikolai Khabibulin needed season-ending back surgery, but he did what he was called up to do and got resigned to a two-year contract last year.

It took me a moment to find the puck in this photo, but clearly Dubnyk had it taken care of.

Last season, he was slated to be Khabibulin’s full-time backup, but Khabibulin (I like typing that name) dealt with more injuries and Dubnyk played to such a degree that he got the start thirty times and notched his first shutout against Nashville, plus two wins against Vancouver at the end of the season. Impressive! He was on Team Canada in the 2011 Worlds, although he only played one game against France, but in that one game he stopped all the shots he faced. This season, he played 35 games, winning 12 and losing 13, including two shutouts, having a 2.71 GAA and a .916 save percentage. He’s going to be a part of the resurgence Edmonton is busily building.

Dubnyk is also an interesting kind of guy. Check out the back of his goalie mask: an angry giraffe and a map of Canada blending somewhat seamlessly into the blue snowflake motif of the rest of it? Sure, dude! But the funniest photo of him I’ve seen is from what was surely a somewhat awkward childhood.

Bless your heart, Devan. I don't think you picked out this look yourself.
