Man of the Day 8/9: Eric Staal

Eric Craig Staal

Born October 29, 1984 (age 26) in Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada

Center and captain of the Carolina Hurricanes

[Hey guys, Eric is our 100th post! Emma and I are in awe of how far we’ve come, and we know good things are ahead! – Krista]

Day Two of our Staalathon continues with eldest brother Eric. He started playing AAA hockey with the Thunder Bay Kings and helped them win the All-Ontario Championship in 2000, the same year he was selected in the OHL Priority Draft by the Peterborough Petes (there’s that name again). Three years later, he was picked second overall by the Hurricanes in the NHL Draft behind Marc-Andre Fleury. He went straight to the NHL that fall.

In the 2005-06 season, he got his first hat trick against the Flyers, led the team in points (28) during the playoffs and came in fourth for the Hart Trophy for league MVP. Soon after that, he signed a three-year contract extension (he got a seven-year extension in 2008 to keep him from being a restricted free agent).

Team Canada in the house!

He’s been named captain twice – once for the Canes in January 2010 (the 15th captain since the team came to Carolina), and then again in 2011 as the captain for Team Staal at the All-Star Game (ain’t it nice to get the entire team named after you?).

He and his younger brother Jordan were on the Canadian team for the 2007 World Championships in Moscow when they won gold against the Finns. That means he’s a member of the Triple Gold Club – Worlds, Stanley Cup and Olympic gold, which he earned as a member of Team Canada in Vancouver.

By the way, the little nugget of cute in the picture below is his son Parker.

I dare you not to go "Awwwww!"
