Man of the Day 8/10: Jared Staal

Jared John Staal

Born August 21, 1990 (age 20) in Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada

Right winger for the Charlotte Checkers/prospect for the Carolina Hurricanes

Today’s edition of the Staal Love Fest focuses on Jared, the youngest. Like his brothers, he got his start in the AAA leagues in Thunder Bay before being drafted by the Sudbury Wolves in 2006. He played one season with them (the 2007-08 season, alongside big brother Marc) and was drafted by the Phoenix Coyotes in the 2008 NHL Draft.

In April 2009, Jared got a tryout contract with the Coyotes’ AHL team, the San Antonio Rampage, and played five games with them before going back Sudbury. In 2010, the Carolina Hurricanes got his rights from Phoenix in exchange for a fifth-round draft pick and signed him to a three-year entry-level contract. He started off this past season with the Charlotte Checkers, the Canes’ AHL team, but was sent to their ECHL team, the Florida Everblades, a month later. He’s now back in Charlotte.

Hustling on the ice.

Poor Jared has the distinction of being the odd guy of the four brothers: he’s the only one not drafted in the first round (49th overall) and the only one drafted by a Western Conference team. He’s also the only right shooter of the bunch.

Someday soon, he’ll take the ice with big brother Eric as his captain. Whether they play the Rangers or the Penguins, that will be a sight to see.

Imagine all four of them on one team. Yeah.
