Born November 29, 1989 (age 21) in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada
Defenseman for the Minnesota Wild
I was alerted to the existence of Spurgeon, as well as tomorrow’s MotD, by the owner of the I Love Goalies blog. Spurgeon is still pretty young, so not as much is known about him, but he’s adorable and just check out the haircut he was sporting on the 2008 draft info website:
Gotta love it. Anyway, Spurgeon was selected156th overall by the Islanders in 2008, the year of the sea anemone hair photo there. However, they didn’t sign him to a professional contract. He spent five years with the WHL’s Spokane Chiefs perfecting his game and was then given an invitation to the Wild’s 2010-11 training camp. This invitation paid off: the Wild signed him to a three-year entry-level contract last September and had him go to their AHL affiliate the Houston Aeros for a while. He played 21 games in Houston and made his NHL debut on his 21st birthday. I bet that was a pretty cool birthday.
Spurgeon got his first NHL goal in a February outing against the Oilers. He added another goal in March against the Avalanche. He split this past season between the Aeros and Wild, playing 23 games for Houston, scoring 2 goals, notching 7 assists and spending 10 minutes in the sin bin. With Minnesota, he played 53 games, scored 4 goals, had 8 assists and 2 minutes in the box. The Wild clearly have a lot of confidence in his ability, so here’s to a good 2011-12 for you, anemone hair! Oh, that nickname comes from a place of love, of course!
