Man of the Day 9/17: Dan Carcillo

Daniel Carcillo

Born January 28, 1985 (age 26) in King City, Ontario, Canada

Left winger for the Chicago Blackhawks

Carbomb, as he’s often known, is new to the Windy City, so let’s profile the Blackhawks’ new enforcer! He started out as a wee Carbomb playing in the junior leagues of Ontario, then hopping up to the OHL, where he was with the Sarnia Sting when he was drafted 73rd overall in the 2003 draft by Pittsburgh. He made the switch to the Pittsburgh system in 2005, but never hit the big show, bouncing between the Baby Pens and the Wheeling Nailers. He was traded to Phoenix in 2007, where he amassed a league-high 324 penalty minutes in the 2007-08 season and also scored his first hatty in April 2008. Also while in Phoenix, he lost two teeth during an on-ice scrapeup and teammate Todd Fedoruk picked them out of a bowl after the game, declaring to the Arizona Republic “That was the friend test and I passed it.” This could be when he decided that he looked alright without them, except for fake flippers he utilizes for fancy events, and began rocking the gap-toothed look he has now. Then it was back to Pennsylvania for Carbomb in 2009, except as a Flyer now. He took part–along with Boston enforcer Shawn Thornton–in the first fight during an outdoor game when they dropped the gloves during the 2010 Winter Classic at Fenway Park. In pre-game interviews, Carcillo said he intended to fight at that particular occasion.

Yep, I think this is why they brought him to the Windy City.

He was a serviceable enforcer for Philly, but on July 1, he signed a one-year deal with Chicago, a team that had been in need of a proper tough guy for a while. Along with his move to Chicago came a move to Twitter (I have heard that the original @OG_Carbomb13 account, the one that produced this infamous tweet, was a fake after all). He can now be found at @carbombboom13. He seems to like his new surroundings, too. With last-season production like 57 regular games played, 4 goals, 2 assists and 127 minutes, plus playoff production like 11 games played, 2 goals, 1 assist and 30 playoff minutes, it’s clear what his role is and he likes to play it. I know Krista’s excited to have him on her team too!

Look at that innocent smile.
