Born December 2, 1980 (age 31) in North York, Ontario, Canada
Right winger for the Washington Capitals
Let’s take a look at the birthday boy! Joel , whose parents immigrated to Canada from Barbados, played for the Owen Sound Platers (now the Owen Sound Attack) after he went undrafted by the NHL. After four years with the team, he played eight games with the now-defunct Long Beach Ice Dogs in California in 2001 before attending training camp with the Detroit Red Wings. It was around this time that the University of Prince Edward Island recruited him to play for their hockey team, and he did, playing all four years and even earning his degree in sociology!
After his college career ended in 2005, Joel was invited to training camp with the Minnesota Wild, and they liked him so much they signed him to a contract and sent him to their AHL team in Houston. He excelled that year, and the Wild gave him a two-year extension, although he mostly stayed in Houston. When he became a free agent in 2008, he signed a one-year contract with the Nashville Predators and made their roster right out of training camp! Soon after the start of the season, he got his first NHL goal against the St. Louis Blues. His first full NHL season was so impressive in both his scoring and his skills as a forward that the Preds signed him to a two-year extension. When thta was up, he signed a four-year deal with the Washington Capitals, and so far he’s gotten four goals and five assists this season. But don’t worry – the season’s still young, and with a new coach at the helm for the Caps, we may see a lot more of him.
