Man of the Day 12/21: Peter Budaj

Peter Budaj

Born September 18, 1982 (age 29) in Banská Bystrica, Slovakia

Goaltender for the Montreal Canadiens

The Blackhawks play the Canadiens tonight, and since this guy will be in net, I thought we’d take a look at him. Peter was drafted by the Colorado Avalanche in 2001 while playing for the OHL’s Toronto St. Michael’s Majors. He spent one more year with them before heading to the AHL and the Hershey Bears. When he made his NHL debut in the 2005-06 season, he backed up the duo of David Aebischer and Jose Theodore and backed up Theo in the second round of the 2008 playoffs. He reached his 100th game milestone on November 3, 2007, and by the 2008-09 season he was named starting goalie for the Avs.

Where's the puck...oh, I see it now.

The Avs signed him to a one-year contract before the 2009-10 season, slotting him as backup to Craig Anderson. But before he could take a turn in net, he came down with the dreaded H1N1 virus aka swine flu – he was isolated from the rest of the team and had to be cleared by his coaches. When he was finally able to return in November, he did it in a big way – he made 28 of 29 saves in the Avs’ 4-1 win over the Phoenix Coyotes. He even made another playoff appearance even though the San Jose Sharks scored a goal on him. Last season, he became the first Slovakian goalie to reach 100 career wins!

In the offseason this year he signed with the Montreal Canadiens for two years, backing up Carey Price. So far he’s played five games, winning one and losing the rest, but the season’s not half over yet. We’ll be seeing more of him.

Looks like Boods is in a contest with Craig Anderson to see who's more stretchy.
