Man of the Day 12/29: Dustin Brown

Dustin James Brown

Born November 4, 1984 (age 27) in Ithaca, New York, USA

Right winger and captain of the Los Angeles Kings

I suppose I should give this guy his due after last night’s game. Dustin played junior hockey with the Guelph Storm, spending three years with them before being picked by the Los Angeles Kings in the 2003 draft. They brought him to the NHL that fall but realized he wasn’t quite ready for the big time, so he spent the next season with the AHL’s Manchester Monarchs (good thing, because that was the Lost Season). When hockey came back to the league, so did Dustin, and the next season he was on a line alongside fellow MotD Anze Kopitar!

Oops, sorry.

In the 2007-08 season, not only did he become the team leader in goals, but he signed a contract that will keep him in LA till 2015! The next year he became THE team leader, being named their captain; at 23, he was the youngest and first American-born captain the team had. He’s been doing all right this season with 9 goals and 11 assists, and perhaps with the help of his new coach, he’ll bring the Kings out of their slump.

Recently, Dustin became Internet famous for something he did. My high school history teacher used to say “You have to be smarter than the door.” Well, poor Dustin wasn’t smarter than the Gatorade bottle.

But he’s taken it in stride:

Yes, Dustin, yes he was.
