Blackhawks-Blue Jackets Game 4 wrapup

Columbus Blue Jackets at Chicago Blackhawks

5-2, Blackhawks

Goals: David Bolland (Chicago) , RJ Umberger (Columbus), Viktor Stalberg x3 (Chicago), Ben Smith (Chicago), Antoine Vermette (Columbus)

Goalies: Corey Crawford (32/34, .941), Curtis Sanford (20/25, .800)

The Good

Congrats to Viktor Stalberg for bagging his first career hat trick! He even sank the third one on an empty netter! You know how I love those, so this was great!

Congratulations on your hatty and your face.

Ben Smith sank his second goal of the season, and Jimmy Hayes and Andrew Shaw were on top of their game again. The reserves in Rockford are not the green kids you think they are, and even though I don’t love why they’re here, I love that they’re doing so well.

Oh, Dave Bolland, show us how happy you are on your goal.

That’s our Rat.

The Bad

For a moment I thought we’d lost our robot captain. Not long into the first period,  Jonathan Toews was hit in the helmet by a shot by Duncan Keith that deflected off the goalpost. He left the ice in pain, but he came back like nothing happened. He has two marks where the puck hit and his helmet cut his forehead, so now he has two sets of stitches to go with the one on his lip. That noise you hear is the sound of Toews fangirls losing it over his little cuts.

As Evgeni Malkin said to Ben Lovejoy after he was hit in the face with a puck, "You look awesome. Girls love."

Patrick Sharp was put on Injured Reserve for 3-4 weeks with an upper-body injury. He’s one of our top shooters, with Toews, Patrick Kane and Marian Hossa. This means that everyone has to step it up now.

The Ugly

Okay, I’m going to state for the record that I hate the instigator rule. I have no idea how it’s implemented. All I know is that Steve Montador was given an instigator with face shield penalty for this fight:

Then Jamal Mayers was given an instigator penalty for this fight with the same guy:

Seriously, I think Jared Boll should ‘ve gotten additional penalties for the incidents against Andrew Brunette and Niklas Hjalmarsson that started the fights. And may I point out that both Monty and Jammer were coming to the defense of their teammates? They shouldn’t be punished for that! As it is, though…

  • Monty got 19 minutes – 2 minutes for instigator with face shield, 2 minutes for unsportsmanlike conduct, a five-minute major for fighting and a 10-minute misconduct.
  • Jammer got 17 minutes – everything Monty got except the instigator wasn’t with face shield and minus the unsportsmanlike conduct.

All I know is that with the way the rule is stated (and the NHL website has a video rulebook, which is very helpful), every fight has an instigator. Why isn’t it used for every fight? I think you either use it for every fight, or you get rid of it.

I feel better now.

Next Game

vs. Minnesota Wild

January 12

Remember the last time we faced them? Let’s do that again (actually, a win in regulation would be peachy)!
