Man of the Day 1/19: Craig Adams

Craig D. Adams

Born April 26, 1977 (age 34)  in Saria, Brunei

Center/right winger for the Pittsburgh Penguins

You read that right, this guy was born in Brunei! I’m not sure of the circumstances (someone could surely fill me in, and don’t call me Shirley), but the family eventually moved to the Calgary’s Lake Bonavista neighborhood. Eventually he went to Harvard – yes, Harvard – and played for the Crimson hockey team. He was drafted by the old Hartford Whalers in 1996 after his freshman year, but he stayed in Cambridge to finish his degree. He played a season with the Cincinnati Cyclones in the 1999-2000 season, but by the time he made it to NHL training camp, the Whalers had become the Carolina Hurricanes. He spent a couple of seasons with the Canes’ AHL team and even played hockey with Milano in Italy during the lost season! Then there was the swap the Canes did with Anaheim in 2005, where Craig went to the Ducks in August but was traded back to Carolina in October. Good thing, because he was with the Canes when they won the Stanley Cup in 2006.

"Hey! HEY! I scored a goal over here!"

In 2008 Carolina traded him to Chicago, and he played with them for half the 2007-08 season and half the 2008-09 season before being traded to Pittsburgh. And you guessed it, he was part of the team that won the Stanley Cup. He’s been with Pittsburgh ever since, and this season he only has 3 goals in 8 points, but hey, he’s dealing with a team full of injuries, including himself!

Keen readers may remember Craig in HBO’s 24/7 Penguins-Capitals program. Rather, they remember his son Rhys:

Too flipping cute!
