Florida Panthers at Chicago Blackhawks
Goals: Jonathan Toews, Duncan Keith and Patrick Kane (Chicago), Jason Garrison (Florida)
Goalies: Ray Emery (18/19, .947), Jose Theodore (19/22, .864)
Snow didn’t keep Blackhawks Nation from attending tonight’s game! Even with the puck drop pushed back half an hour, people still trickled in to United Center to watch the boys. The organization even rewarded some lucky fans who braved the storm and tweeted pics of themselves in the stands by giving them signed pucks and magazines and other goodies. Is this a great team or what?
It was also Feel All The Feels Night because we had some old friends in the house – Brian Campbell, Tomas Kopecky, Jack Skille and John Madden. Kris Versteeg hadn’t laid eyes on the Stanley Cup banner at all since he’d been traded to Toronto, so I’m sure that was a thrill. Don’t worry, I did my “I love you I miss you come back” thing hours before the game started.
Ray Emery made some huge saves tonight. And you know what? I didn’t hear the Corey Crawford fans complaining about him not starting. Perhaps they’re realizing what I’ve been saying all along about our goalie tandem.
While we’re on the subject of goalies, I have to give a shoutout to Jose Theodore. He’s one of my favorite goatenders in the league, and he’s proven this season that he is a beast himself, coming off a knee injury that sidelined him for quite a while this month. My compliments on your game, monsieur.
Okay, so other than Jonathan Toews’ opening goal or Duncan Keith potting his third goal of the season, the goal that everyone is talking about is Patrick Kane’s beauty in the second period. He tore out of the Hawks zone, zipped by a defenseman on the boards and made a little breakaway for the wrister that went five-hole so perfectly. It was his first goal in seven games, and it ended his drought. I think it also boosted his confidence.
Blackhawks Nation breathed a sigh of relief. I shed a few tears of pride.
There was an error in Toewsbot program “Avoid Penalty Box”. He got nicked twice – once for hooking, the other for tripping. I’m always surprised to see him in the sin bin.
What was with Andrew Brunette’s waved off goal? Everyone was saying it was good, but the ref called it high sticking. That’s the second waved off goal in as many games. Just call the goal good, and if someone has a problem with it, they can review it. If the ref had done that, it probably would’ve stayed good.
THE WEATHER. A nasty winter storm blew in, dropping the temps the day before and bringing so much snow that street crews got stuck during rush hour. That just happened to be when the guys set out to UC before the game. Kaner mentioned postgame that it takes him 10-15 minutes to get to the arena from his place; it was an hour and a half before he set foot in the building, and that was with him leaving early. Even the Cats were caught in it, with some hailing cabs early while the rest of the team were stuck on their charter bus from their hotel downtown. They didn’t get to the rink till 6:44 local time. Not a lot of time to prep, even with the postponement.

The last time we played them, it was Halloween and the game ended in a shootout. Let’s win this one in regulation!
