Man of the Day 1/28: Raphael Diaz

Raphael Diaz

Born January 9, 1986 (age 26) in Baar, Zug, Switzerland

Defenseman for the Montreal Canadiens

Diaz is part of the Team Chara rookie coalition and I wanted to learn a little more about him, so this weekend, why not take a closer look? Diaz, who is of Spanish descent, began his playing career with the hometown team EV Zug starting in 2003 after three years of being with EV Zug’s junior-level squad. His hometown team appears to have made their league’s playoffs every single year he was there–impressive! He’s also represented Switzerland in international play: U18 Worlds in 2004, U20 Worlds in 2005 and 2006, Worlds in 2008, Olympics in 2010. Not bad!

Another thing that is not bad: his face.

He got in with the Habs on a one-year two-way contract in May 2011. In October, he scored his first NHL goal against Ryan Miller and the Buffalo Sabres. So far this season with Montreal, he has played 46 games, scored three goals, provided 12 assists and spent 22 minutes in the box. He became part of the rookie coalition as a replacement to the injured Adam Larsson and as part of the rookie coalition of Team Chara, both he and the other Hab at the ASG are on the team captained by the Bruin. I bet that’s kind of awkward, but hey, it’s the ASG. Let’s have a good time.

Plus, he and Carey Price are dutifully documenting their every move while in Ottawa. Party on!
