Bruins game 49 wrapup

Carolina Hurricanes at Boston Bruins

3-0, Hurricanes

Goals: Eric Staal (Carolina), Tuomo Ruutu (Carolina), Brandon Sutter (Carolina)

Goalies: Cam Ward (47/47, 1.000%), Tuukka Rask (28/31, .903%)

The Ugly:

Everything about this game was ugly. Sloppy, half-hearted play, no one performing exceedingly well, tired and desperate sort of play, Carolina sweeping the series with us for the first time in its entire existence (even during the Hartford days)–Is there some sort of curse where we just perform exceedingly badly against the team so deep in the East’s basement that they should really check for mold?

(I was really tempted to make this wrapup two words long, a reference to the “Shark Sandwich” review in This is Spinal Tap, but I couldn’t figure out how to make it that succinct. So instead I went for the “Everything was ugly” angle.)

I really have nothing else to say about this mess and I do not wish to dwell on it. Everyone in the organization knows tonight was terrible and Lord I hope they’re resolving to do better on Saturday. The schedule honestly doesn’t get much easier from here on out and they should know and play better than this. This is not something that just started happening tonight; these are problems that have been developing for a while and are very worrisome indeed. I really hope that they wake up and remember how to play a full 60+ minute game soon.

No, wait, here’s the one good thing: even though the Hurricanes won, they are still in fifteenth in the East while we remain at second.

But we still need to improve. And fast.

Next Game:

vs. Pittsburgh Penguins

February 4

NHL Network

Here’s hoping we can do better.
