Blackhawks trade news

After days of speculation and watching some choice picks get snapped up by other teams, Stan Bowman FINALLY made a badly needed move.

This afternoon, the Blackhawks picked up (or rescued, to these Thrashers fans) defenseman Johnny Oduya from the Winnipeg Jets in exchange for 2nd and 3rd round picks in the 2013 draft. This can be seen one of two ways:

  1. It’s a win for us because, hey, defenseman!
  2. We passed over Jaroslav Spacek in favor of Oduya.

Actually, it really is a win for us, because Johnny O is great on the PK (which has been lackluster as of late) while he admits he’s less than stellar on the power play (which needs a major blood transfusion, like, yesterday). I haven’t watched him play this season for obvious reasons, but perhaps he can show our defense how to effectively screen…that would be lovely.

Alas, as we gained Johnny, we lost the team Teddy Bear, aka John Scott, who was traded to the New York Rangers for a 5th round selection in this year’s draft. The move frees up the space on defense for Johnny, and I’m sure some people will be happy to see him gone, since he only played 29 games and didn’t have very high TOI. I will miss him, though, if for nothing else than his bubbly personality off the ice and the fight he had against Derek Dorsett when they played the Columbus Blue Jackets. Then there’s this:

So long, Scotty. The Freshwave commercials won’t be the same without you.

The downside to today is that I don’t think it was enough – we needed a solid second line center, perferably someone who’d be great on the power play. Stan explained that there were offers made, but they were too high. We can only hope that Jonathan Toews can be healthy again, and that Stan resigns Daniel Carcillo in the offseason. That would certainly help our situation.
