Man of the Day 3/27: Gustav Nyquist

Gustav Nyquist

Born September 1, 1989 (age 22) in Halmstad, Sweden

Right winger for the Detroit Red Wings

If we’re going to profile a Wing, why not this guy for what he’s done recently? Gustav played for Malmö in Sweden before being drafted by Detroit in 2008; that was also the year he decided to go the University of Maine for hockey. While he was with the Black Bears (a very cool name for a team, btw), he led the team in scoring all three of his years and was even a Hobey Baker finalist! He decided to leave Maine and signed a two-year entry-level contract with the Red Wings last March and immediately began playing with the Grand Rapids Griffins.

He began this season in Grand Rapids but got his first call to Detroit last November 1st. He played with the big guys sporadically till this month, when he began to play with them regularly, and on March 26 he scored his first NHL goal! Here’s to more of those, and here’s to a bright future in the Motor City!

Congrats, or as they say in Swedish, grattis!
